The Riverwood Forest Retreat – Dooars is located on the fringes of the Gorumara National Park at the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas in Northern West Bengal. The resort was started in 2008 by Waxpol Hotels and Resorts and offers guests an opportunity to experience the vast open grasslands, riverine forests, swamps, woodlands, and streams that make up the terrain of the region. The Retreat is located along the banks of the River Murti opposite the Gorumara National Park that is renowned for its Indian One Horned Rhinoceros, Elephant, Indian Gaur (Bison), Muntjac and Leopard population along with other wild animals.

The jungle resort has played an important role in pioneering sustainable wildlife tourism in the Dooars region and implemented various eco-friendly processes to adhere to the local ecology. We have successfully incorporated rain water harvesting to fulfil the water requirements at the resort. We have grown indigenous plant species in the surrounding land to make it into a haven for bird and insects. We have also built a migratory bird pond that is visited by endemic and migratory birds.

The resort is located in an area that is frequently visited by elephants. The property design of ground plus one allows guests to view the vast expanses of the forest and the wildlife. There are 12 stylishly  furnished rooms and the decor makes use of locally sourced materials where possible. The menu at our multi-cuisine restaurant comprises of dishes inspired by the various communities that inhabit the Dooars region. Our chefs utilise locally sourced ingredients as much as possible. International cuisine is served on request as well.

Guests can relax by the outdoor pool or jacuzzi and enjoy a sundowner at the Hornbill Bar in the evening. The resort also has a large outdoor garden area that is popular for hosting soirees.

The Gorumara National Park is located at a distance of 12 kms from The Riverwood Forest Retreat-Dooars. Spread across 86 sq. km, the National Park has a stunning landscape and is home to a plethora of animals, birds, reptiles and insects. It was formed as a reserve forest in 1895 and was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1949 with the objective of protecting its Indian rhinoceros population. Eventually, in 1994, it was declared a national park. The Ministry of Environment and Forests declared it as one of the best protected areas in India in 2009.

The Watch Towers inside Gorumara National Park offer an excellent vantage point to observe the abundant flora, fauna and avi-fauna. Jatraprasad Watch Tower, named after the favorite elephant of the Forest Department, is the most popular watchtower amongst tourists.  Located at the extreme end of the park, Chukchuki Watch Tower is an excellent spot to view the indigenous and migratory bird species in the jungle. Medhla Watch Tower was recently built in the vicinity of the river Murti and is open throughout the year. Visitors to the watchtower can observe herds of Elephants, One-horned Indian Rhinos and Gaur (Indian Bison) near the river. The Forest Department has arranged for buffalo carts to escort visitors to the watchtower.

TIGER SAFARIS
IN JALDAPARA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

The Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary is located at a distance of 72 kms from The Riverwood Forest Retreat-Dooars. The Sanctuary is home to two of the big five wild animals – the one-horned Indian Rhinoceros and the Royal Bengal Tiger.
The park organises jungle safaris and Elephant safaris. Elephant Safaris are organised early in the morning. The elephant safaris are rather popular as you get to tour the forest while riding elephants. There is also the option of a Jeep safari.

IN NEORA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

The Neora Valley National Park is located at a distance of 84 kms from The Riverwood Forest Retreat-Dooars. It is renowned for its natural beauty and is a popular destination for trekking. The Neora Valley landscape is made of virgin natural forests, dense bamboo groves, colourful canopy of Rhododendron trees, lush green valley, meandering rivers and streams with snow-capped mountains.

There are giant trees like oak, sal, ferns, rhododendrons, bamboo groves, and also tiny wild strawberries, Himalayan yew, wild white orchids and primulas. There is an abundance of wildlife that thrives in the forest. The endangered Red Panda and the Asiatic Black Bear are commonly seen in the upper Neora Valley.

Guests can consume their own liquor in their rooms.  Our Hornbill Bar near the Poolside is a perfect place for guests to relax and unwind.

Yes, we  do have a pool table at The Riverwood Forest Retreat – Dooars. Guests above 12 years are permitted to use it.

Guests can cycle inside the resort. If guests wish to cycle outside the resort, we recommend they book the cycling tour where there will be an escort with them. We are located in the buffer zone of the park and wild animals, especially elephants, do roam around and it is unsafe to travel alone.

We do not provide swimming costumes on rent. Guests can purchase swimming costume of their choice from “Rhino Shop” located near the swimming pool.

In Gorumara National Park, one can see Elephant, Leopard, Indian Bison (Gaur),  Spotted and Barking Deer, one-horned Indian Rhinoceros and  other animals. The closest place to see tigers is Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary.

Guests can drive to:-

Samsing-Suntaleykhola is located about 25 km from the resort. It is renowned for its scenic beauty, lush green tea gardens, traditional orange orchards and cardamom plantations.  There are trekking trails in the region as well as a bio-diversity park.
Bindu and  Jhalong hamlets are located 50 km from resort. Located in the lower Himalayas near the Jaldhaka Dam and Bhutan Border, guests can visit Bhutia, Sherpa and  Tamang Villages.
Lava and Rishyop are small villages located in the Lower Himalayas. The hamlet of Lava is the entry point to the Neora Valley Park. Popular sightseeing places in the region are the Lava Monastery and the Neora Valley Interpretation Centre.

We are an environmentally conscious organisation, hence we do not provide slippers in rooms, as they are generally use and throw and add to the non-perishable waste.

The Swimming pool has an Adult Zone which has a maximum depth of 4.5 ft. The Children Section has a depth of 2 ft . Children have to be accompanied by an adult at all times while in the swimming pool. There is no lifeguard on duty at any hour at the pool.

It is mandatory for all Foreign Nationals to carry their original passport and all Indian Nationals (including children) need to carry a valid government approved Photo Identity card  (Driving Licence/Aadhaar Card/Passport/Voters ID card) of each and every residing guests, including children. The same has to be submitted at the time of check-in. Please note that PAN Card will NOT be accepted as a photo ID. Guests will not be allowed to check-in and the entire amount paid will be forfeited in case they are not able to produce a valid id. Their transfer cost back to the place from where they arrived will be additional and will not be covered by the resort.  Without the photo identity no individual will be allowed to stay at the resort or enter the national park.

No, we cannot accept or change foreign currency at the resort. Dooars being a remote region of India has limited ATM and Money Changing facilities. It is advised that you carry enough local currency for local purchases and personal expenditure. No credit is given at the resort.

The gorgeous landscape of Dooars is home to a number of endangered species. Home to the endangered one-horned Indian Rhinoceros, Elephant, Indian Gaur (Indian Bison),  Leopard, Jungle Cat, Hornbills, Kingfishers, Barbets, Minivets, Wagtails and many more.
