The Riverwood Forest Retreat – Pench offers visitors an escape into the visually stunning landscape of the Pench National Park. The beauty of this region has been immortalised in Rudyard Kipling’s classic – The Jungle Book. Located near the renowned Pench Tiger Reserve, the retreat opened in 2013 and is the third wildlife resort in the Waxpol Hotels and Resorts portfolio. It has been certified by TOFT as a quality accommodation and awarded a 3 star classification by the Department of Tourism, Ministry of India. The resort was awarded the Best Wildlife Resort by Madhya Pradesh Tourism in 2017.

The jungle resort has played an important role in promoting sustainable wildlife tourism in the Pench region. We have implemented various eco-friendly processes such as rain water harvesting, planting indigenous plant species in the surrounding barren land to make it into a haven for bird and insects,  and using solar panels to harness solar energy, which in turn powers the water heaters and solar lights used at the retreat.

The Pench National Park is blessed with a rich variety of flora and wildlife. The resort organises various excursions like Jeep Safaris, Canter (Open Bus) Safaris, Birdwatching Tours, Photography Tours, and Nature Walks that provide guests with an opportunity to see the different animal and bird species living in the forest. We also organise Night Safaris in the nearby Wolf Sanctuary.

Pench and the adjacent Kanha National Park are connected by the Tiger corridor. They are popular amongst wildlife photographers and enthusiasts who get ample opportunities of Royal Bengal Tiger sightings and other wild animals like Leopard, Dhole (Wild Dog), Indian Grey Wolf, Indian Bison (Gaur), Jackals, Sambar Deer, etc. The region is home to over 300 species of resident and migratory birds, which has made it a favorite destination among bird lovers.

The wildlife resort features 21 spacious, accommodation options including 8 Gardenview suites, 8 Riverview suites, 4 premier Riverview suites and one Tree House.  All the rooms have intricate artwork on the walls made by local artisans, have private gardens with shaded sit-outs and huge windows overlooking the garden, forest or the river bed.

Guests can spend a leisurely day browsing books on flora and fauna in the library, play indoor or outdoor games or relax in our jungle facing swimming pool. Our recently opened spa, Vankasa, is the ideal place to get a relaxing massage or spa treatments. The Deck, our all-day restaurant, serves authentic Madhya Pradesh cuisine and has an alfresco area with a spectacular view of the non perennial river and buffer forest. Pench National Park touches the velvety reaches of AVSM (Aravali, Vindhyachal, Satpura & Maikal hills), a most ancient and beguiling portion of the Central Indian mountain ranges. It is located on the southern boundary of Madhya Pradesh, bordering Maharashtra, in the districts of Seoni and Chhindwara. The park is named after the Pench river that flows through the forest from North to South. The forest is spread over 758 sq. kms out of which 299 sq. km is the core area comprising of the Indira Priyadarshini Pench National Park and the Mowgli Pench Sanctuary whereas the remaining 459 sq.km makes up the buffer area. The park was established in 1975 and was subsequently declared a tiger reserve, Kanha-Pench Tiger Conservation unit under Project Tiger in 1992.

Pench Tiger Reserve, which includes the Indira Priyadarshini Pench National Park, the Mowgli Pench Sanctuary and the buffer area, has a glorious history. A description of its natural wealth and richness occurs in Ain-i-Akbari. Several natural history books like R. A. Strendale’s ‘Seonee – Camp life in Satpura Hills,’ Forsyth’s ‘Highlands of Central India’ and Dunbar Brander’s ‘Wild Animals of Central India’ explicitly present the detailed panorama of nature’s abundance in this tract. Strendale’s semi-autobiographical ‘Seonee’ was the inspiration behind Rudyard Kipling’s world-renowned masterpiece – ‘The Jungle Book’.

JEEP SAFARIS

The Riverwood Forest Retreat – Pench organises daily safaris in the morning,  afternoon and night. The safaris are conducted in 4X4 vehicles and last usually for a duration of 4-5 hours. Morning safaris start just before sunrise and last for 5 hours. The afternoon safaris start around 2.30pm and end at sunset. Pench also offers a night safari in the buffer zone from 6pm to 9pm. A safari drive in Pench is a study in contrasting habitats that is made more interesting by your guide’s/naturalist’s narration of the importance and role of each region.

The safaris give you the opportunity to witness the wild animals and birds thriving in their natural habitat. Some of the biggest herds of Spotted Deer and Gaur are seen grazing on succulent grasses along the backwaters of the Pench National Park. Leopards can be spotted in the rocky areas. The tiger population has increased in recent years, leading to some excellent sightings of the majestic animal for visitors in the park. Other predators that can be seen during the safaris are the Indian Grey Wolf, Wild Dogs and the Striped Hyena.

KNOW MORE

CANTER (OPEN BUS) SAFARIS

Pench National Park offers Canter safaris at Turia (Madhya Pradesh) and Khursapar (Maharashtra) Gate .

Canter is an open safari bus which seats 12-20 people depending on the model and park. Its a higher vehicle and has only one guide to cater to all the guests. For a serious wildlife enthusiast, this is not the ideal way to do a safari. Whereas for a group of friends, or family, Canter works very well as it keeps everyone together. Canter Safaris are booked one day in advance and maybe conducted only if there is a minimum 80 percent occupancy.

Interesting part is that wildlife does not discriminate between a Jeep and a Canter, it shows up nevertheless. But a Jeep is far less disturbing to wildlife compared to a Canter.
